Why native plants matter
Many gardeners don't realize that most of the plants sold in big box stores and even commercial nurseries are non-native, from virtually every corner of the world except for here. This is a problem because many of these plants, while beautiful, don't provide the habitat required by many of our native pollinators. If you want to support a diversity of native pollinators you should be including a variety of locally-native plants, selected to bloom so you have flowers throughout the season. I suggest you start modestly, converting one part of your garden every year or two, and see how your changes are attracting more bees, butterflies, and even birds to your property.
